This Look Good, Do Good Brand is on the Rise
About a month ago we had the distinct pleasure of meeting and working with the team at Girlfriend Collective , a seattle based sustainable activewear brand. It's actually an interesting story how we came to connect with the brand. But, we know attention spans are getting shorter these days and this post is already on track to become a long one. So... long story short, Kim used to work with one of the Girlfriend girls, way back in her Dolce Vita days, and she reached out to us to do some modeling with them. Which we did and it was a really fun day!
After working with the brand, wearing the brand, and reading up about the brand, we have to say that this is one company we can get behind - and you should too! Here's why:
Commitment to sustainability. Girlfriend Collective is pretty transparent about their production methods and practices, you can read all about it on their website here. The document is pretty lengthy, so if you're looking for the TL;DR we've got you. All their fabrics are made from recycled materials such as post-consumer water bottles (which is turned into polyester) and fishing nets (which is turned into nylon). The clothing is made in a facility in Vietnam, where they ensure the workers are paid over minimum wage, have a safe working environment, get regular breaks, have meals provided, and offer free biannual health checkups.
Body positivity. If you take a look at their website or social channels, you'll instantly see the diversity we've all been craving from brands/retailers. They use models of nearly every size and ethnic background. From working with them, we get the impression that they love showing regular women (as in, not professional models) wearing their clothing. Additionally, their size range goes from xxs to xxxl - so they really do make clothing for every body.
High Performance. Sure it's clear that Girlfriend Collective's work out sets are super cute and colorful, but can they keep up with whatever workout you throw at them? The answer is yes! We've taken our workout sets on bike rides, lifting weights at the gym, hiking, and even swimming. The waist band on the leggings always stays put and doesn't sag, and the material doesn't get awkwardly see through when you bend and stretch. The bras are more like a cross between a bra and crop top, so they have full coverage and we'd say around a medium amount of support. If you wear a larger bra size and are doing something like jumping jacks, these bras might not hold you up like you'd want. But for everything else, the support is just right.
Have we convinced you to give this brand a try yet? If so, here are a few other good things to know:
Sizing. We are wearing a size small in both the bra and leggings in these pics. However, the bras fit great around the bust, but are a little loose around the rib cage area. Kim also has the bike shorts in an xtra small. So we might actually be between sizes in this brand?
Where to shop. Obviously, there's their website girlfriend.com. But they are also carried at Nordstrom (both online and in certain stores), and Reformation.
Last thoughts, we promise! We truly believe that the way we spend our money is an investment in the kind of world we want to live in. So we are more than happy to give progressive brands, like Girlfriend Collective, that are so thoughtful in all areas of business our hard earned dollars!
