Summer’s Here! Time to Bust Out the All Natural Sunscreen

DSC04878.jpg

Thanks to good ‘ol rona, our summer is gonna be a little different this year. Looks like we’ll have to put our trip to Greece on hold…and no more vacationing in the South of France. to be honest, we probably weren’t going to do those things anyways (but a girl can dream). This doesn’t mean there will be no summer this year. On the contrary, We’ve been taking full advantage of that sweet Seattle summer sun. As of right now, things are slowly opening back up, which means picnics in the park, lounging at the beach and lunch on the patio. All while wearing a mask and social distancing, of course. We almost forgot, there’s one other thing we need to protect ourself from…the sun. So we’re sharing our favorite sunscreen and how we like to use them.

LET’S START WITH THE FACE

If you don’t already, you should be wearing sunscreen on your face everyday. This will help prevent premature aging, sun spots and let’s not forget skin cancer. Sunscreen is still important even if you don’t plan on spending that much time out in the sun. Studies have shown that the “blue light” emitted from our phones, computers and TVs can cause skin damage as well.

We like to apply SPF 30 to the face as the last step of our morning skin care routine. Or if we want to put on a bit of make up, we’ll opt for tinted moisturizer that has SPF in it as well. Who doesn’t love a two for one. Just be sure to choose something with SPF 30 or greater, anything less and it’s not effective. And if you don’t want that silver/grey tint on your face, make sure zinc oxide isn’t on the ingredients list.

Also, if you’re having fun in the sun, don’t forget to reapply! This can be tough if you have makeup on. But there are some great powders with SPF or spray, that will keep you from smearing your makeup.

NOW FOR THE BODY

Let’s be honest, who actually uses sunscreen on their body? We’re trying to get better at it, but most of the time, we only use it when we’re on vacation. But it’s important to use during your backyard tanning sessions too.

Did you know that you need to apply sunscreen at least 15min BEFORE you go into this sun?! Yeah, we don’t usually adhere to that. But don’t worry, if you’re a procrastinator (like us) you can still apply some sunscreens. Just make sure they have zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These provide an immediate barrier between your skin and the suns harmful rays.

Also, if you’re super lucky and are snorkling at a reef…Hawaii is opening up to tourism (fyi!!!) be sure you are using reef safe sunscreen.
